Tip #1: Find an Anchor

Not literally (unless you like anchors of course) – but you may find it helpful, and visually pleasing, to have a style “anchor” of sorts. The perfect example of an anchor is a tray. A beautiful tray will visually and literally “anchor” your other decorative items into a neat grouping or focal area. It will help make your decor look intentional instead of cluttered.

Tip #2: The Power of 3

Groupings of three items are very pleasing to the human eye. One of the most common design “rules” you will see in decor is to use groupings of three (or at the very least an odd number). They don’t have to be three of the same exact thing, but think in terms of clusters of three. For example: a candle, a vase, and a trinket dish; or a frame, a figurine, and a plant.

Tip #3: Balance is Important

It’s a great idea to keep in mind visual “balance” any time you are decorating. It’s not a hard and fast rule, as exceptions may apply, but in general it’s a helpful guideline. Try to avoid having a bunch of the same sized objects, or lopsided arrangements. Balance tall narrow items with smaller or shorter things, for example – like a tall vase, matched with a stack of books topped with a pretty bowl. In many of the examples to follow, you will notice why balance matters.

Examples:

Here are some beautiful examples for inspiration. It doesn’t have to be hard, or expensive, to style a coffee table. Often you can shop in your own home and find a few things that look nice together. As I look around me right now, I see an orchid I can borrow from the kitchen, a candle from the dining room, and a lovely small picture frame on a shelf. I could grab a tray (anchor) and boom, my coffee table looks polished and presentable.

Bonus Tip: Plants!

A lovely little succulent, dried greenery, or a live plant all add the organic texture and visual that can complete any arrangement. Fresh flowers are pretty much always a great design choice, and they can add so much emotional value to a room. Whenever possible, add plants in an appropriate scale – you can’t go wrong! [notice how every example above uses plants / flowers / greenery!]

Modern Boho Decor Inspiration

Modern Boho is an increasingly popular decorating trend inspired by organic materials (think rattan, leather, organic fabrics, and lush greenery). It’s a perfect marriage of the welcoming, comfortable, and natural roots of Bohemian style (a.k.a. Boho), combined with clean lines, and modern elements.

This style can be fun and forgiving, and allows freedom of personal style by incorporating cultural elements that speak to your own personal experiences. There are a few ways to approach Modern Boho to achieve your desired effect.

Adding colors, textiles, or artwork from around the world can add a punch of exciting color and inject a casual and fun vibe into your decor. You will often find deeply saturated jewel tones like in the pictures below.

Here are a few examples:

On the other hand, a warm neutral palette can be so clean and calming while still maintaining the Modern Boho feel. This is my personal favorite style! I am always drawn to the brown leather couch as a focal point, surrounded by neutrals (often a black and white rug), and some pops of greenery. The poufs are a nice touch, and can be functional while also decorative.

This style of boho can be more calming, in my opinion, while still incorporating layers (upon more layers!) of texture, fabrics, and earthly elements. I would almost call this introverted Boho 🙂

Source: Wayfair

Notice how there are usually a few “staples” in a neutral boho styled room. For example, you will frequently find a basket used as a planter, such as these:

  1. Woven seagrass belly basket
  2. Natural Craft Seagrass Belly Basket (White Zigzag)
  3. Woven Cotton Rope Plant Basket (the plant shown here is a “snake plant” which is a great option for houseplants since it’s hard to kill and thrives on neglect)

And quite often you will see a “pouf” or two hanging out in a corner or cozied up next to a chair. They are so versatile and portable! Is it an ottoman? Is it a pillow? Is it a table? Yes to all of the above! Here are some great options I would use in a boho styled room, as well as some comfy floor pillows that serve a similar purpose:

  1. Handmade Leather Moroccan Pouf Footstool Ottoman
  2. Christopher Knight Home Alfie Boho Cotton Pouf
  3. Signature Design by Ashley Decorative Pouf
  4. Vibrant Woven Jute 26-inch Floor Pillow
  5. Balam Floor Pillow

As I mentioned, a standard element of “classic” Boho decor is vibrant color. Deep purples, blues, and mustard tones come to mind, often with asian roots. If you are looking for boho accents, think “world travel souvenirs” accumulated over generations. If you haven’t had the opportunity to tour the world and gather boho accents for your living room, here are some easy ideas to get you started:

  1. Stoneware Watering Can Vase Set – Pack of 2
  2. Greenland Home Fashions Jewel Pillows (Set of 2)
  3. 4 Piece Eliza Bottle Décor Set
  4. Ceramic LED Table Lamp Blue
  5. Wood Tray with 9 Glass Votive Holder
  6. Tiara End Table
  7. Ruggable Patchwork Boho Rug

And on the more neutral side, here are some great options:

  1. Antique Brass Arch Floor Lamp with Rattan Shade
  2. Distressed Wood Jute Rope Floating Shelves
  3. Stoneware Planter with Wood Stand
  4. Moon Phase Decor Wall Wall Hanging
  5. Boho Stripe 18″ Square Natural Pillow **ON CLEARANCE**
  6. 2 Piece Boho Wood Feathers Wall Décor Set

I hope you found some inspiration in these ideas! What are your favorite decor styles, and where do you find inspiration? I would love to hear your thoughts and ideas – Happy decorating!
