Does Overtone cover gray hair?

Short answer:  kinda.

–> Skip the backstory and go right to my results (no hard feelings!).

I haven’t colored my naturally dark hair since February.  It is now late June.  The pandemic is still in full force – the first wave seemed to be almost under control, but now I’m very worried that it is not.  At all.  I’m not comfortable going to a salon, and I’m in-between stylist anyway.

I’m also on furlough from my regular job, so I haven’t received a paycheck in several weeks.  I have no desire to spend hundreds of dollars for 6 weeks of root coverup.  I considered embracing my gray roots, I really did, but I just don’t like it.  So what’s a girl to do?

There are some options – box dye for one.  I know how much it wrecks hair, and the results can be questionable at best.  Plus it’s a smelly mess, amirite?

After searching for the holy grail, I stumbled upon Overtone.

If you’re not familiar with the concept, it’s a color depositing CONDITIONER.  Overtone is Ammonia-free, Sulfate-free, Vegan, and Cruelty-free.  Yesss!

It’s not bleach, and it won’t lighten hair.  If you have dark hair, like me, the pastels won’t show up at all sadly.  But if you want to add a hint of color to lighter hair, or darken your current look – this is a great option!!  I decided to give it a try.

My hope was to see some root coverage although I was skeptical.  I also wanted to go back to my natural very dark brown color.

I searched for Overtone coupon codes (no paycheck, remember?), and I stumbled upon a random person’s referral code for $10.  Click here to get my code if you would like to use it to save $10 on your first purchase.

My color of choice – the darkest brown:  Espresso Brown.

Espresso Brown Coloring Conditioner

Here’s how it went!

As you can see, I still have some gray in my roots. Some of the gray did pickup color, so it’s much MUCH better (especially when it’s not so close up lol). I super LOVE the dark color too – and look how shiny! I’m going to do another round focusing more on the roots to see if I can darken them a bit more. The great thing about this product is that it’s a conditioner. It literally is good for your hair, so you can use it as frequently as you want, and use as much as you want, and you won’t hurt your hair at all. I should also mention that it smells minty (some people love the smell – I don’t love it, but it’s nice). And my hair feels crazy soft and healthy after the treatment.

I’ll do round 2 in a few days and report back with any updates 🙂 I hope this was helpful for anyone with dark hair looking to cover the grays. Let me know if you have any questions about my experience – I’m happy to share!

Things you can buy on Amazon for $1 (or less)

Are you looking for small fillers to get free shipping? Here are some things you can get for under $1.

Some of these are really great finds because they are practical or edible! For example, you can get a can of black beans which is a pantry staple for most, and always welcome at a food bank for donations if you don’t want or need it.

I’ll admit, on the other hand, some of these are pretty random, but that’s not the point at all.

The point is: sometimes you just buy the random thing because it’s just enough to get you past the free shipping threshold.

I made $1000 with Ibotta (with no referrals)

I didn’t earn it over night, or even in a year, but I did hit the $1000 milestone this week and wanted to share with you how I use it!

Ibotta is a really intuitive, user friendly, simple app that pays you cash back (think rebates), when you redeem offers (think coupons). The offers are available at a wide variety of stores, and range from grocery staples to cocktails, to clothing, to travel, and more.

If you are ready to sign up (it’s FREE), here is my link to get yourself started (with an added bonus)!

It’s very simple to use it, I promise! To cut straight to the chase, here’s how it works for in store retail shopping (I’ll get into the details below):

  1. Log in to the app and select the offers you want
  2. Go shopping
  3. Redeem the offers by snapping a pic of your receipt (and some stores can link your loyalty card)
  4. Get paid

Online shopping is a bit different, but super simple. You basically just launch your shopping trip from the Ibotta app or website, and you will automatically receive your rebate.

There are a few ways to give your earnings a huge boost as well. This is where the cash really starts to pile up.

  1. Complete bonus offers
  2. Use Ibotta Pay
  3. Refer Friends

Here are the details:

When you log in to the app, you will have the option to search for offers. You can search by retailer, or specific product, or you can just browse away. I usually start by selecting the store I’m going to – So when I’m planning a grocery trip, I’ll start by looking at Publix / Walmart offers.

Usually I just scroll through, and when I find an offer that I like (something I definitely buy, or would consider buying) I just click the “+” symbol. That’s literally all there is to it.

There are always “any brand” offers too – so these are a nice way to bump up your savings very easily. Plus, these can be stacked with the branded offers. For example, you might see “any cereal” and you might see “cheerios” – you would be able to redeem both of them – yay!

This one is pretty obvious 🙂 Go to the store and shop.

Now it’s time to redeem your offers. Don’t be intimidated, it’s really no big deal, I promise.

Some stores allow you to link your loyalty card directly to Ibotta (Publix, Winn-Dixie to name a few that I use). You need to make sure it’s linked in advance (which you can do right in the Ibotta app), and your rebates will automatically be redeemed for you! There will be nothing you have to do!

If you haven’t yet linked your card, or are shopping where this is not an option (or maybe you prefer to redeem manually), this is how you do it.

  • Go into your Ibotta app
  • Click on “Redeem Offers”
  • Select which store you shopped at
  • Upload your receipt (at Walmart all you have to do is use your camera to scan the code on your receipt; at other stores you take a picture of your receipt and “upload” the photo).

Depending on which retailer you used, you will likely get paid within a few hours of redemption. With Walmart, I almost always get paid in minutes (and sometimes instantly). It takes a bit longer if you are using a linked loyalty card. Once you have accumulated $20 (I usually hit this in a week or two) you can cash out to Paypal, or select a gift card.

If you really want to give your earnings a quick boost, you really should pay attention to the bonus offers. This is how I accumulate savings so quickly. These bonuses are a huge help!

Pay special attention around holidays or big events, because Ibotta will often give you extra opportunities to make money!

For example, the week leading up to the Super Bowl Ibotta had a “Go Whomever!” bonus. It was an extra $10 (yes – ten dollars) when you redeemed a certain number of offers. Then last week there was a surprise “Mid week money maker” for $3.00 when you redeemed a certain number of offers (and these tend to pop up a lot). So in addition to the rebate offers you are getting, you also get the bonus. I think I made like $30 in just that one week.

In addition to Ibotta bonus offers, some brands will offer bonuses too. For example, a common one I see is for an extra $1 if you redeem a certain offer on two different shopping trips (many of the offers re-appear shortly after you redeem them, then you can use them again).

This one is pretty new to me, but I’ve used it a few times this month and I actually like it. The gist is, you pay in store via the Ibotta app, and for doing so you earn a percentage of your total purchase PLUS it counts as a redemption (which is great if you need a certain number to earn a bonus).

In full disclosure, I was nervous about trying this the first time. I told the cashier in advance what I was doing so they wouldn’t think I was just standing there fumbling with my phone.

Ibotta explains it much more concisely than I can, so I’ll quote them: “To get started, connect a credit or debit card in the Ibotta app and head to a participating retailer. When you use Pay with Ibotta at checkout, you’ll earn instant cash back on your entire purchase. Plus, upload a receipt from your trip to earn even more cash back on individual offers and watch your earnings stack up.”

In simplified terms, at the register, you type in the amount of the transaction, and it’s just like you are buying a gift card for that store. It’s all seamless and instant. Don’t be scared to try it!

Yet another way to get a quick boost is to refer your friends. You will have your very own referral link, and when your Mom, cousin, co-worker, whoever signs up with your link you can earn a bonus too!

I hope this was a helpful overview! As you can probably tell, I’m a huge fan of Ibotta and I use it almost every time I shop. I have reached the $1000 milestone by taking advantage of bonus offers.

If you are ready to sign up (it’s FREE), here is my link to get yourself started (with an added bonus)!

Big Impact Retailers

I love learning about companies that are working hard to care for our precious Earth. It’s really inspiring to know there is good in the world, don’t you think?

You probably know by now how much I love Rothys. They are more than great shoes. I love what they stand for and their mission to help the earth from suffocating in plastic.

#savethefishies Fact No. 101:

Every day approximately 8 million pieces of plastic pollution find their way into our oceans.

Another great company I recently found has a similar vision. They are passionate about marine conservation, rescue, and preserving our oceans.

This company is Sand Cloud.

Sand Cloud is a super cool, beachy, fun apparel company that creates beautiful (and affordable) products. Their tees are made from recycled plastic water bottles!! How cool is that? And, 10% of their profits are toward marine conservation ❤

As an added bonus – here is a 25% off coupon just for you!

Sharks are Awesome Eco Tee
Blue Steel Leggings

They also make reef safe sunscreen made in the USA!

Organic Reef Safe Sunscreen

They have hats, towels, recycled sunglasses, wineglasses, and more!

If you want to check them out – here is a 25% off coupon you can use!

Gorgeous and affordable sunglasses

I just recently discovered these smokin HOT (and polarized!!) shades. Living in Florida makes me very conscious of the dangers of sun exposure, as much as I adore the glorious sunshine almost every day. While we do a great job of slathering on SPF all over our skin, we don’t always care for our eyes as we should. I have a hard time finding sunglasses of decent quality, that look and feel great as well, so I used to default to my kohl’s or TJ Maxx cheapies (that provided zero protection).

Until now!

Recently I discovered Blenders eye-wear. They have so many great styles at a wallet-friendly price. I can’t even express how excited I was to discover quality (with UV protection), great looking sunglasses at this price – OMG! I am officially ob-sessed y’all!

My absolute favorite pair when I’m out on the boat or running errands is the blue angel polarized (aviator style). These functional and super stylish sunnies are under $50!!

Tip: You can get $20 off your first pair of Blenders with my link here.

If you have Rakuten (formerly ebates), you can also get 3% cash back and they regularly have exclusive deals (currently it’s a 20% off coupon code!). And, if you are new to Rakuten, you can get a $10 sign up bonus with my link here.

Sunglasses - BLUE ANGEL

My go-to for beach fun or pool time are the Pacific Grace (also Polarized, and under $40!):

Pacific Grace
Use my discount link to get these for under $20!

My husband LOVES this style (Black Tundra), which are very similar to his pricey Ray Bans:

Sunglasses - BLACK TUNDRA

They are having great deals now on their sale page as they get ready for new seasonal styles, so with the $20 discount you could actually get then for next to nothing!

If affordability is important to you – then head over to I don’t know where you could find a better selection at killer prices. Seriously, you can get a great looking suit for under $20 (some sale items are in the $15 range).

Where to find the best tops to pair with leggings

I need more leggings in my life – how about you? They are perfect for working from home, or running errands on the weekends (they – are – pants!). A huge leap above pajamas, and a small upgrade from joggers (which I also love) – but oh so comfy! If I’m not going to the office, or really anywhere besides the grocery store and hauling kids around, why not be as comfortable as possible.

The great thing about leggings, is that you can also dress them up a bit to look totally put together (hello Rothys!!). It’s also important (for me) to have enough *ahem* coverage, if you will. I don’t want my rear end on display. If you are in the same boat, check out these fabulous tops to pair with leggings that will cover your butt!

Before you shop – don’t forget to use your Rakuten account for cash back! If you don’t have an account yet, and want a $10 bonus, you can sign up with my link here. If you have no clue what I’m talking about, you can read more on my post here. It’s the best!!
